In my final project, I am aiming to focus on how quarantine is affecting mental health and how it has progressed from a state of enjoyment into disarray. In a period of uncertainty, what is freedom within confinement? The working title of the project is “Bird in a Cage,” which delves into the emotions most people are feeling around the globe. Many of the forms of escape that people cling to in the form of entertainment, dining, and exercise have changed from an outdoor environment to one centered on a virtual experience. My project will be in the format of a premiere video remix with some aspects of aftereffects implemented. In my video remix I plan on showing what I call the three phases of quarantine that I alternate between in near daily intervals: calm, gluttony( in the form of entertainment, food, and exercise), and anger( not on as dramatic as scale though). I also plan on incorporating Salvador Dali’s dripping clock, and extending, morphing, and changing the opacity to make it appear that time is disappearing or slowing down. The videos will have an intermission between each of the theme videos that will include my mom, grandma or I ripping out calendar pages. The intermission videos will start with myself pulling the pages out, then progress to my mom, and finally end with my grandma to show the steady movement of time. I plan on using videos that are both pop culture icons and symbolic of times of uncertainty. The videos will revolve around the themes of time, monotony, and danger, but also adventure in the face of unknown. The first video that I will use is Groundhog Day, which will show the scene where Bill Murray starts to fall into a routine and calmly understand that he needs to focus on the changing the things he can control. The second video I will use is Elf, which will incorporate the theme of gluttony, as it will show the scene where Will Ferrell eats massive quantities of spaghetti and sugar. In the third video, I will display the theme of anger, which will be represented through The Shining, with Jack Nicholson’s scene going crazy in the hotel and Wendy swinging the bat. Since my video project is already in a format that can be digitized, I plan on either sharing the link and posting my video on YouTube or emailing the file. This video will take on the topic of our new virtual reality in a way that implies humor and theatrics to create a spoof performance.
